I know this post is a little old, but the Akai R2R machines are the best in my opinion. Never had head issues or anything and I USE Mine! Ripping CD's to tape is a real treat, try it sometime. As to your comment on the heads, the GX line all have Glass and Crystal ferrite heads. Any Akai in the tape era that was a GX use those heads. instruction/owners manual GXD.
